"The greater the difference in worldview, the more difficult it is to understand one another and communicate effectively"

While reading Chapter 1 Introduction to Public Speaking, quite a few points drove me into having deeper thoughts. One in particular was this text from page 5, "The greater the difference in worldview, the more difficult it is to understand one another and communicate effectively."

There are 3 purposes for speaking in public.

1.     To inform your audience (informative speech)

2.     To persuade

3.     Commemorate/entertain

What if we follow all guidelines for an effective public speaking experience but fail at social unity? When someone chooses to be a public speaker, they are deliberately choosing to become social role models, someone to deliver glad tidings & to uplift its audience. One must be careful and in-tune to all cultures. And when I say culture, I include all aspects such as laws, dress, social standards, religious beliefs, traditions, etc. When using words of wisdom, you must persuade audience, rather than create conflict as we see all over the world. Being one sided causes friction between cultures which ultimately creates cultural division. Can you imagine a world where peace exists because of an effective public speaker?

  1. I think it’s very interesting how in order to get to a certain type of communication, it’s important to know about your audiences backgrounds. It makes such a big difference like you said! Social unity allows the community to want to listen to the speaker. - Katelyn Mulder

  2. Ruba, it would be wonderful if people could unite instead of divide. This would be a great world then. People nowadays seem to speak more from emotion, and that can cause difficulties. It would be great if we were all on the same page, wouldn't it?

  3. Ruba, I like how you touched on the three purposes for speaking in public. Understanding your audience how Katelyn mentioned is so important for those who are public speakers and are a common voice for the people. It seems as if nowadays most individuals speak from their emotions how Sandy had mentioned rather than speaking with a clear mind and steering clear of those difficulties. We can only hope and pray for the time to come where we're all on the same page and can unite as a whole.

  4. I like how you talked about the different purposes for public speaking, some people may not know that there are three. I also totally agree with the fact that there needs to be unity to be able to listen to one another in the community.
