Week 11

I have listened to quite a few speeches, live-in person, and online, but one always seems to be my go to when I feel like I need a pick me up, or a reminder to do and be better. Dr. Rick Rigsby gave an inspirational commencement speech at a graduation that teaches us so many lessons. He uses humor, and a tough time in his life to share with his audience the lessons he has learned from a third grade drop out who happens to be the most intelligent man that he had ever known, his father. He spoke in such a way that heightened the power of his message. His presence was abundant, and he used the volume of his voice to strengthen how his points reached his audience. Dr. Rigsby also had great eye contact with the audience which I believe helped him connect with his audience. There was no need to use notes since he was very prepared and passionate about his speech. Any person that listens to this speech can can walk away feeling inspired wanting to do more in life no matter how rough the road ahead of you is.

I urge you to listen to this speech and drop a comment on what you think of it!

I will leave you with a couple quotes that I learned and love from this speech:

"Make sure your servant's towel is bigger than your ego. Ego is the anesthesia that deadens the pain of stupidity. Pride is the burden of a foolish person"

"You are what you repeatedly do, therefore, excellence is a habit, not an act"

"You'd rather be an hour early than a minute late"

"How am I living?"

  1. Ruba, I enjoyed your words on Dr. Rigsby and I really like the things you described about him that he offered when giving a speech. Having great eye contact and not looking down at a piece of paper, or notecard, in my opinion shows tremendous passion in what you're talking about and it should show. Also, I like how you touched on how he uses his strong voice heightening the power of his message. I often times will intentionally be louder in a conversation to either make sure I'm heard, or to really stress a point in trying to make. Maintaining eye contact and using a strong voice to heighten the power of your message is vital in delivering a speech.

  2. It's fantastic that he gives his father so much credit for the person he turned out to be. More life lessons are learned outside of school. I have a friend that only went as far as eighth grade, yet she has given me more good, sound advice than you can 'shake a stick at.' I'm glad this speech made such an impact on you!

  3. Very interesting takes you have on his speech! I'll have to check it out as it seems like a very well spoken commencement address. I love the quotes that you've left at the end - they are inspiring and motivational!

  4. I really loved the video you shared with us, especially how he talks about his dad so much. I also really like the last quote you left, "How am I living?" It really makes you think deeper about your life and if you are living the way you truly want to be.
